Bunny Love – Why Your Rabbit May Be Your Best Valentine’s Date Yet!
As Valentine’s Day approaches our thoughts turn to our loved ones. More and more people these days are choosing to include their pets in their Valentine’s Day celebrations, with special gifts, food and outings.
But is this passion for our pets just a little bit crazy? Maybe not!
For over 25 years, research has shown what we as bunny lovers have known all along – owning a pet has amazing benefits for our health and emotional well being.
It can lower blood pressure and reduce anxiety. When you do any pleasurable activity, such as playing with your bun or laughing as you watch her binky, the body releases dopamine and serotonin which are chemicals known to lift your mood and have a calming effect.
Researcher Judith Siegle found that the stronger the attachment to your pet, the greater the benefits. And maybe I’m biased (OK, I’m definitely biased!) but I think that bun owners have some of the strongest attachments to their pets that I’ve ever seen.
But recent research about touching our pets is even more interesting.
When you fall ‘in love’ with someone your body releases large doses of dopamine, phenylethylamine and oxytocin. It’s these chemicals that give us that giddy ‘head over heels’ feeling.
Studies show that petting your furry friend can have exactly the same effect. So, you’re not just imagining it. You really do get a rush of love when your bun snuggles into you and lets you pet her.
And maybe it goes both ways? Some bunnies love being petted so much that it has a hypnotic effect on them. This is what happens when owners put their buns on their backs and ‘trance’ them by stroking their faces or heads.
So this Valentine’s Day if you’re feeling a bit blue because you don’t have someone special to share it with, grab a DVD (Who Framed Roger Rabbit is always a bunny favourite) and have a snuggle on the couch with your bunny.
It may be the best Valentine’s date you’ve had yet!
